Speedwell’s bright blue flowers have long been a traveller’s token. In Ireland, tiny sprigs were stitched into coats before a journey for protection, and in Britain its roadside clumps were said to “speed you well” on your way. The English name likely carries both that farewell blessing and a nod to how quickly the picked blooms drop — a fleeting beauty best left growing. Folk names abound: Bird’s-eye and Cat’s-eye describe the white “pupil”; Paul’s Betony ties Veronica officinalis to old herbals; Eye-of-the-Child-Jesus and the genus name Veronica recall the “true image” of Saint Veronica. As a household remedy, Veronica teas were taken for coughs, catarrh and skin troubles, and for a time the plant was brewed as “Europe Tea,” a thrifty stand-in for costly imports. Hedge-banks and grassy lanes are its home, flowering most in spring, when those four-petalled sapphires — with their small white eye — give a modest benediction to passers-by: safe travels, keep well, and remember that some charms work best when they’re simply seen and left in place.
Our medal charms are made with real flowers in sterling silver, using the traditional technique of lost wax casting. They are beautifully packaged with our signature box posy which changes with the seasons, a card detailing our favourite facts and folklore, and a gift card for a personal message.
