HAWTHORN - For Hope & Fertility

Hawthorn is steeped in mythology and legend. Historically it’s also known as the fairy tree and was believed to be a gateway to the otherworld, inhabited by powerful fairies. Young girls wanting to ensure their beauty in the coming year rose at dawn to bathe in dew gathered from the flowers. A witches besom (broomstick) is traditionally made of hawthorn wood. Perhaps Britain’s most famous tree the Holy Thorn of Glastonbury is a hawthorn tree said to date back to Joseph of Arimathea, which blooms twice a year. Once in May and again around Christmas, a sprig of which is traditionally sent to the Queen to decorate her breakfast table on Christmas morning.
